What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence is a set of skills that defines how effectively you perceive, understand, reason with and manage your own and other's feelings.

Why consider Emotional Intelligence Training for Managers?

Enhanced emotional intelligence transforms entire companies when applied to all levels and roles, or it can be used to improve individual business functions such as leadership, sales, and customer service.

Some Vital Statistics (Schmidt 2012)

High levels of emotional intelligence, result in consistently high engagement scores. Gallup’s research has shown that organizations with high levels of engagement earn 3.9 times earnings per share greater than like organizations with wide and varied engagement results.

Those with a high degree of emotional intelligence make more money—an average of $29,000 more per year than people with a low degree of emotional intelligence. The link between emotional intelligence and earnings is so direct that every point increase in emotional intelligence adds $1,300 to an annual salary. These findings hold true for people in all industries, at all levels, in every region of the world.

Introducing the GENOS Model

The GENOS Model of Emotional Intelligence was developed in the late 1990s by Dr. Ben Palmer and Professor Con Stough from Swinburne University. It involves seven core emotional intelligence skills identified in their research on a wide variety of different models and measures of EI.

At Skill Junction, we use the seven skills of the model to develop the productive leadership states, shown on the outside of the model, and to minimize the unproductive leadership states, shown on the inside of it.

There is a strong positive relationship between leaders’ emotional intelligence and employee engagement as seen in the image below.

In the graph below, each dot represents an employee’s engagement score. The x axis of the graph represents leaders’ emotional intelligence as a percentile score - scores between 1 and 39 are low, 40 to 59 are average, and 60 and above are high.

Engagement Results

As you can see, being average or low in emotional intelligence results in wide and varying levels of employee engagement where employees are disengaged, not engaged and engaged. These types of engagement scores are typical of low and average performing organizations. Conversely, high levels of emotional intelligence, indeed total emotional intelligence scores above the 75th percentile, result in consistently high engagement scores. These types of engagement levels among employees are typical of high performance organizations. Indeed, Gallup’s research has shown that organizations with this type of engagement level earn 3.9 times earnings per share greater than like organizations with wide and varied engagement results.

How the Program Works

The program focuses on seven core skills of Emotional Intelligence via structured learning modules delivered by a certified Genos EI practitioner in either a one-on-one or small-group coaching format.

The learning modules draw on the latest adult learning principles and focus on an individual’s:

• Decisions and Behaviour

• Thoughts and Feelings

• Values and Beliefs

The 7 Secrets to Power and Influence lie in the 7 skills that are core to the GENOS model of Emotional Intelligence. 

1. Emotional Self-Awareness

  • Self Awareness is about being aware of the behaviour you demonstrate, your strengths and limitations and the impact you have on others.
  • You will learn to enhance your understanding of how your own feelings impact decisions, behaviour and performance.

2. Emotional Expression

  • Emotional Expressions is about recognising and being ale to effectively express your own feelings.
  • You will learn how to enhance trust and understanding with work colleagues.

3. Emotional Awareness of Others

  • Awareness of Others is about noticing and acknowledging others, ensuring others feel valued and adjusting ones own style to best fit with others.
  • You will learn to increase your capacity to engage, respond to, motivate and connect with work colleagues.

4. Emotional Reasoning

  • Emotional Reasoning is about using the information in feelings (from oneself and others), and combining it with other facts and information when decision-making.
  • You will learn to enhance your decision-making and increase your ability to get buy-in to decisions.

5. Emotional Self-Management

  • Emotional Self Management is about managing your own mood and emotions; time and behaviour; and continuously improving yourself.
  • You will learn how to boost your job satisfaction, better cope with demanding workloads and enhance your productivity and performance.

6.Emotional Management of Others

  • Emotional Management of Others or "Inspiring Performance" is about facilitating high performance in others through problem solving, promoting, recognising and supporting others work.
  • You will increase your capacity to reduce conflict, and inspire performance in others by creating a positive team and work environment.

7. Emotional Self-Control

  • Effectively controlling your strong emotions.
  • You will improve your well-being, increase your capacity to think clearly under stress and cope with challenging emotional situations.

The Logistics of the Programme:

There are a total of x 10 2-hour sessions run over a 3 - 6 month period OR for those who want to get the programme quickly delivered and integrated into their business or team, or you have the option of a 2-day Workshop Intensive which consolidates the learning below.

  • The Assessment Tool is debriefed in the first session within the group
    • ** The option to have a one-on-one coaching debrief is available **
  • Each of the 9 learning module includes practical application exercises
  • Participants apply these exercises in their day-to-day work and monitor the impact the exercises have on their decisions, behaviour and performance
  • The outcomes these exercises generate are reviewed in subsequent sessions to reinforce the value of applying emotional intelligence in the workplace
  • Following the model, participants have the option of participating in coaching sessions to support their learning journey. This provides meaningful data and measurable progress within a structured framework

GENOS Emotional Intelligence Assessments

Pre-and-post program Emotional Intelligence Assessments can be included in your programme.

The pre-program assessments are used to:

• determine base-line levels of Emotional Intelligence

• identify individual strengths and opportunities for development, and

• tailor the content of the program to address individual needs.

The post-program assessments are used to:

• examine the level of enhancement achieved

• identify areas to focus on post the program, and

• determine how to sustain the enhancement post the program.

** You have an option of using one of two Emotional Intelligence Assessment tools, depending on your specific individual or organisational needs. Result and Return on Investment:

The average level of Emotional Intelligence enhancement achieved is approximately 20%.
