This past week has been pretty intense with me working with 2 new clients to deliver two new workshops: Building Resilience and Influencing Stakeholders.....
These topics seem to be unrelated, but they actually work hand in hand:
Developing resilience is an essential ingredient in helping you to bounce back from and over the many small, medium and larger challenges that come our way when dealing with the many people you daily have to influence to get tasks completed.
A definition from Australian Psychologist, Andrew Fuller says:
Resilience is the the happy knack of being able to bungy-jump through the pitfalls of life
I love this definition because it helps me to focus on the positive gifts we find in our adversities, rather than labouring under their weight.
That I can, if I learn to use my ability to bounce, leverage both the positive and negative within the situation to help me to keep moving so I don't become stuck.
Using Your Strengths to Develop Your Resilience
And so, as I was doing my preparations and research for this week's workshops, I was challenged to find examples of where I authentically practice the stuff I teach in my own life.
I realise how much I underestimate my abilities and capabilities - especially my strengths when it comes to resilience.

Set for Threat: A Help and a Hindrance?
As a lot of you who have attended my workshops know, we have a survival bias which means we look to the negative BEFORE we look to the positive. This has helped us survive.
But, it also gets in the way of relationships and helping us achieve our goals...
I came across a great video on developing resilience, which if you have ever gotten stuck because you felt overwhelmed or "lost" when it came to a project or task you have got to get done, will serve you well. It's a ted.com talk by Alison Ledgerwood and can be found below.
Is Resilience Natural or Nurtured?
Contrary to popular opinion, everyone has resilience. We are born with it.
However, it is our responsibility to nurture and develop it.
The results of doing this can be pretty life-changing. Shawn Achor in his ted.com talk, "The Happy Secret to Better Work" says that we are 31% more productive in positive than in negative, neutral or stressed.
This is good news for those of you who have now gotten unstuck from the negatives in your life after watching Alison (see above) in action and want to know what the next steps are.......

Inspiration to help with the Perspiration of Nurturing our Resilience
We all need inspiration to keep us going - especially when the going gets tough.
One of my modern-day heros, Nelson Mandela was inspired by poet, William Ernest Henley in his poem, "Invictus"
I'm including the poem as read out beautifully by Morgan Freeman from the moving true story "Invictus", about how Nelson Mandela worked together with the South African rugby team to help unite a nation torn apart by apartheid, misunderstanding and conflict.
I was a young adult living in Johannesburg in 1995 and winning the world cup was something that was touted by the world and rugby fraternity as being "unachievable" for South Africa who came in as the under-dog in the series.
When Nelson came onto the Rugby Field that fateful day, wearing the green and gold with Francois Pienaar's number on the back, his action called us all as South African's to unite proudly under one banner, to draw on our inner "bounce" to let go of the past and step into the future.
In doing so, he, Francois and the South African rugby team, helped to transform our nation and allowed us to see the possibilities of a united land.
This glimmer of hope still lingers in South Africa.
Resilience is a part of our human DNA - South African, Australian, European, African, American, no matter where you come from.
As Robert Jordan said,
“The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived.”
Today, I wish you a day filled with bounce!
